How to Create a Safe and Healthy Garden
_A healthy garden is a place where the plants and the food you grow will thrive. You can achieve a beauiful garden even if you dont have plentyy of time to devote to gardening. It is easy to keep your garden low maintenance as long as you plan carefully and keep up with chores so that they dont get out of hand. When planting, the needs of plants have to be taken into consideration in terms of soil type, temperature, aspect and spacing. Plants which are indigenous to an area usually will grow best because all the conditions are right for them.
_Not all plants are safe to grow, many of them are poisonous and some can adversely affect your health. Many well-known garden plants are dangerous as they are poisonous (such as laburnum, yew, lupins and daphne) and you need to take preventative measures to exclude these plants from your garden especially when young children are part of the household. Some beautiful plants that many people like can cause a great deal of distress for asthtma and hay fever sufferers, some can also cause dermatitis when handled.
There are few devastating plant diseases in nature, nor are many plants wiped out by insect damage. That is because plants regulate themselves and a variety of plants grow together in a mutually supportive way. There are plants which secrete chemicals that are useful for their neighbouring plants and certain chemicals can also be used to repel predators. Others provide shelter for their neighbours.

_The use of herbs in the garden not only adds color and life but they also have a powerful influence on our life. They contain medicinal properties that have been used for centuries. In a healthy garden, we should not use chemical-based formulas to control insect pests because beneficial birds, insects and small mammals can be killed if we are doing so. You can try to have plants that secrete substances to repel certain types of pest.
Plants that attract pests away from those you want to protect such as mustard for wireworms, broad beans for red spider mites, tobacco plant for whitefly and nasturtiums for blackfly. Plants that attract beneficial predators such as wasps (celery, sunflowers, chamomile), ladybirds (stinging neetles, yarrow, tansy), hoverflies (fennel, ivy, solidago). You can also use pest deterrents for your garden – aphids (nasturtiums, fennel, dill), flea beetle (tomatoes, catnip, hyssop), colorado beetle ( onion, coriander, dandelion), nematodes (African and French marigolds, chrysanthemums).
